Carbohydrates, also called Saccharides are one kind of biological molecules. Among all the four type of biomolecules, carbohydrates is the most available molecule. They are also known as “carbs” in short.

Carbohydrates plays many vital roles in organisms that include the transportation of energy. Carbs are also known as a structural component in insects and plants.

Generally, carbohydrates are starches and sugar. They consist of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen atoms.

The 2 basic compounds that make carbs are called Aldehydes and Ketones.

Multiple of carbs can incorporate together to build chains or polymers. Polymers formed by carbohydrates can work as molecules for long-term food storage, as membranes to protect cells and organisms, and as the prime structural strength for plants.

Matter of fact, organic matters mostly found on earth are made up of carbs. Carbohydrates are known to be involved in various aspect of life.

Types of Carbohydrates

There are three types of carbs available. These are disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polysaccharides.

Monosaccharides: The smallest form of carbohydrate molecules is called Monosaccharides. Some examples of this type of carbs are glucose, fructose, or galactose.

Glucose provides most of the energy to the cell in organisms.

Glucose is mostly available in dairy products and milk. Major source of fructose is fruit and vegetables.

Disaccharides: When two monosaccharide molecules bonds together, it forms a disaccharide. These type carbohydrate molecules are available in forms of lactose, sucrose, and maltose.

Lactose forms when glucose bonds with galactose molecule. Lactose is mostly available in milk.

And, when glucose bonds with fructose molecule, it forms a sucrose. Sucrose is mostly found in sugar.

Polysaccharides: When multiple monosaccharides bonds together to form a chain, it is called Polysaccharides. Different kind of polysaccharides mostly responsible for storing food in plants, they are also called starch.

Some are also responsible for structural support in plants. And, some are responsible for building strong outer skeleton in insect bodies.

Carbs for Nutrition

Potatoes, beans, bran, cereals, rice, pasta, and bread are foods rich in carbohydrates. Most of the foods that contain a high amount of carbs are mostly starch. Carbs are commonly known as the prime source of energy in almost all organisms that include human beings.

We can literally say that only fats and proteins can provide us with enough energy we need for our body to function properly. However, besides supplying energy, carbohydrates are important for some other reasons as well.

As the neurons can’t burn fat, our brain requires carbohydrates, especially glucose.

Carbs are also known to be responsible for diabetes, which is not good at all. But, our body needs carbs to gain a good health. Needless to say, the right type of carbs in the right amount is all we need.
